High surf closes Ocean Beach Pier

Lifeguards say they will reassess whether they will reopen the pier on Sunday morning. They also want to stress, “know your limits before hitting the water."

SAN DIEGO — The Ocean Beach Pier is once again getting thrashed by waves due to a combination of high tides and big surf.

Surfer Frankie Allison said, “It is definitely difficult if you get hit by a wave. It is hard to keep moving forward.” Lifeguards say only experienced swimmers and surfers should get in the water.

Around this same time last year, the Ocean Beach Pier closed for several months after strong waves ripped apart a section of the walkway which left a gaping hole along the side. The pier reopened back in May.

This go around the closure is just a precaution to keep people sage n case there is damage again. Lifeguards say they will reassess whether or not to open the pier on Sunday morning. They also want to stress to people, “know your limits before hitting the water.”
