SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A coalition of labor, Latino and socialist organizations will band together for a series of rallies Sunday to call for immigration reform.
The groups will gather at noon at Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park and, at 1 p.m., march to the downtown Federal Building on Front Street for a 2 p.m. rally.
Another rally is scheduled for 3 p.m. outside San Diego City Hall.
Recent estimates put the number of illegal immigrants in the United States around 11 million, and immigration reform groups want the government to create an alternate way for those already here to become citizens.
The organizations involved are the Academic Professionals of California, American Federation of Teachers Local 1931, Anakbayan, Creating Alternative Fair Enterprise, Education for All, KmB ProPeople Youth, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the Peace Resource Center, the San Diego chapter of Pride at Work, San Diego Maquiladora Workers Solidarity Network, San Diego Renters Union, the San Diego Troublemakers Union, the Socialist Club of San Diego City College and UC/AFT San Diego Local 2034.
According to the Web site for the event, its an effort to raise the consciousness of workers regarding labor rights, protections and benefits.
