SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A Berkeley college student nearly beaten to death in the College Area last month is making a remarkable recovery. He has been transferred out of the hospital, and now two suspected gang members are under arrest.

Neighbors on Antioch Place near SDSU are relieved to hear the good news, of two arrests in the beating and robbery of 18-year-old Grant Richman, a Berkeley college student attacked in the street over the holiday break.

"You don't think of somebody lying in wait to take somebody out on a little cul de sac," neighbor David Cameron said.

Terrence Jarvis, 26, and 20-year-old David White could spend the rest of their lives behind bars if convicted of attempted murder, robbery, attempted robbery and shooting into an inhabited dwelling. Police say the two men's crime spree happened December 27 and 28 at five different locations in San Diego County.

The complaint alleges the two men are street gang members who were armed with guns during the crime spree. Jarvis was arrested in San Diego, and Smith is behind bars in Mesa, Arizona awaiting extradition.

They are also accused of trying to rob an employee of a pizza restaurant on El Cajon Boulevard and shooting out the windows of a house on 57th Street.

Richman was found bleeding in the street with severe head injuries on December 28. His wallet and cell phone were taken.

"I feel really bad for that guy and I hope whoever did this to him gets all the punishment they deserve," neighbor Justin Sevatte said.

Richman had spent the past month at Scripps Mercy Hospital, but he was recently transferred to a rehab facility.

Neighbors say the brutal crime has made them feel uneasy and unsafe for the past several weeks.

"I mean if somebody's going to come down a little street and bang somebody in the head with a pipe or crowbar, I don't know how to protect against that," Cameron said.

Jarvis is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon in downtown court. White will appear in court Monday in Maricopa County, Arizona for an extradition hearing.
