Serra High School lockdown lifted

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A gunshot heard coming from a canyon area in Tierrasanta where two burglary suspects fled prompted authorities to temporarily lock down Serra High School, San Diego police and school officials said.

The pair was spotted about 7 a.m. carrying copper wire from a school construction site and staff members chased them into the canyon between Santo Road and Interstate 15, San Diego Unified School District spokesman Jack Brandais said.

Staff members believed they heard a gunshot, Brandais said.

School police placed the campus on lockdown at 7 a.m., before students arrived, San Diego police Officer Frank Cali said. Officers set up a perimeter and called in a helicopter and additional resources, he said.

Parents were notified at 7:15 a.m., Brandais said.

Students were either kept safe inside the locked-down school, under the supervision of staff and police at nearby DePortola Middle School or were kept home at their parents' discretion, Brandais said.

Police finished searching the canyon north of the campus, but there was no report of the suspects being taken into custody, Brandais said.

The lockdown at the high school was lifted at 9:35 a.m. and students were returning to the campus under staff supervision, Brandais said. Parents and guardians received instructions via a telephone message.
