SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Mayor Bob Filner says he is considering a proposal to build a new Chargers stadium that could also benefit the city's bottom line.
According to Filner, the city could redevelop and sell the Qualcomm Stadium and the Sports Arena land to help pay for a new downtown stadium.
Filner says depending on the concept, taxpayers would be off the hook and the city could even make money on such a deal.
"I don't want to give money for the kind of things that a private, wealthy stadium owner can do on his own, but if the freeing up of land gives us a chance to really get some money for the city, then we're talking about money coming in," he says.
Filner stresses that this is one of many concepts the city is considering.
