Traffic stop results in 5,000-pound pot bust

A driver's traffic violation in Chula Vista yielded about 5,000 pounds of marijuana in a commercial vehicle, and sent the teenager to jail, police said Sunday.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) — Chula Vista police say they found about 5,000 pounds of marijuana inside a truck after the driver ran a red light.

A police officer questioned 19-year-old Christopher Velazquez during the routine traffic stop Saturday night and determined that he was unlicensed to drive. Before impounding the vehicle, police searched it and discovered the drugs.

Lt. Phil Collum said Sunday that it was unclear if the marijuana came from Mexico. Chula Vista is a San Diego suburb located near the Mexican border.

Collum says the amount of drugs suggests the driver was working with others but investigators have not reached any conclusions.

The Bonita man was arrested on suspicion of marijuana transportation and possession for sale.
