Police on lookout for UCSD stabbing suspect

UC San Diego police are searching for a man suspected of stabbing an undergraduate student Monday evening in the center of campus.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A male student was stabbed in the neck by a transient at UC San Diego, a university official said.

The stabbing occurred around 7:15 p.m. Monday outside the university's Center Hall, Jeff Gattas, the university's executive director of marketing, media relations and public affairs said.

The student, whose name was not released, was hospitalized with a non-life threatening wound, Gattas said.

"We just think it's a random act," Gattas said.

Gattas described the suspect as a male transient around 50 years old, 5 feet, 4 inches tall, thin and wearing a hooded sweatshirt in a camouflage pattern.

Gattas said the 45,000 member university community was informed of the incident and ensuing search by email, text, phone and online around 9:15 p.m.

San Diego Police Department Officer Dino Delimitros said a department helicopter on the way to another call had flown over the university but officers in it did not see anything.
