SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Unified School District Board of Education President Kevin Beiser won reelection Tuesday night by defeating challenger Amy Redding.

Beiser, a teacher in the Sweetwater Union High School District and a former county Math Teacher of the Year, said he plans to work to keep class sizes low; protect art, music and career vocational education; and improve graduation rates.

Redding, a former biotech research associate who chairs a district advisory group that advises the board on financial decisions on efforts to help disadvantaged students, had said she wanted to make student-focused decisions, work to rebuild the district's financial stability and advocate for school safety and security.

In the June primary election, Beiser defeated Redding by 68 percent to 32 percent, but that vote was only in their district -- of Scripps Ranch, Tierrasanta and San Carlos. The general election brings in voters districtwide.

Retired teacher Michael McQuary ran unopposed to represent areas along the coast, Linda Vista and parts of downtown San Diego. The post is currently held by Scott Barnett, who opted against seeking reelection.
