SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Golden retrievers have higher rates of cancer than other breeds of dogs and as a result their lifespans are significantly shorter. Now scientists in Colorado are trying to figure out why cancer is so widespread in this breed.

Dr. Ogilvie is the Director for the Angel Care Cancer Center in Carlsbad explained that 56.6 percent of all goldens are affected.

And it's those numbers that are the reason the Morris Animal Foundation in Colorado is doing a study on 3,000 golden retrievers, over their lifetime, to see what might be the cause.

Watch the above video for details on the study.

Other breeds that have higher rates of cancer include the flat-coated retrievers and the bernese mountain dogs.
