SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It was a historic start to Pride festivities in San Diego on Tuesday night, as Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral held a ceremony to light the building in the colors of the rainbow.
"It was tremendously exciting to see them come on," said Rev. Penny Bridges.
The lights are an acknowledgment from the Episcopal church in their full inclusion of the LGBT people and the community.
"They have created a home for so many people who can't find a home in any other church," said Bob Carney.
It was the first time a mainstream denomination has helped celebrate Pride.
The ceremony drew dozens of people of all ages.
"This church again, and again has spoken out for equality," said Councilman Todd Gloria.
Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral also plans to light the church pink for breast cancer awareness, and red for HIV/ AIDS awareness.
