We're just getting word of a deadly accident on the 76 near Palomar Mountain.

RINCON (CNS/CBS 8) - A head-on crash near Pauma Valley Country Club left two people dead Friday and two others injured.

The collision, which involved a commercial box truck and a passenger vehicle, occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. on State Route 76, near Sams Mountain Road in the rural Rincon area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Two people died at the scene, Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser said. Medics took two others to Palomar Hospital for treatment of moderately serious injuries.

Oceanside CHP reports the driver of the commercial box truck, a 49-year-old male from Chula Vista and a 43-year-old male passenger were traveling westbound on SR-76. The driver of the truck stated the other vehicle, a Mazda Miata, was going the wrong way headed towards his truck. He was unable to avoid the collision and both vehicles hit head-on. The victims' names were not immediately available.

According to the Oceanside CHP report, the driver of the Mazda Miata, a 24-year-old male from Escondido and his 27 year-old male passenger from Carlsbad were killed instantly. It is unknown how fast the Mazda was going or if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the collision.

The wreck left the two-lane roadway closed in the area through the late morning, the CHP reported.

The crash remains under investigation.
