CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) – A Customs and Border Patrol Officer (CBP) was arrested for murder Saturday night after she told police that she shot and killed her boyfriend during a domestic dispute.
Melissa Hayes-Spencer, 30, was booked by the Chula Vista Police Department Crimes of Violence Unit for homicide.
The shooting happened at the Pinnacle Apartment complex on the 1300 block of Santa Rita near East Palomar in Chula Vista. The call came in around 8:45 a.m. Saturday, according to police.
When police arrived on scene, they found a man in his 30s on the floor of the bedroom with a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hayes-Spencer was treated on scene by paramedics for an injury to her hand. Police say she cooperated with officers and voluntarily went to the Chula Vista Police Department to meet with investigators.
Neighbor, Theo Deocampo, watched as she was escorted away.
"They walked her out of the house and a policeman escorted her to the ambulance truck. She didn't look freaked out or anything, she was just steel faced," Deocampo said.
Police are looking into whether there have been any other reported incidents of domestic violence between the couple. A dog found at the apartment was turned over to family members.
A handgun was found in the bedroom, according to police.
Hayes-Spencer’s boyfriend’s name has not been made publicly available.
The San Diego District Attorney’s Office is coordinating with detectives in the investigation.
