SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - Superheroes inspire us. Despite all that is stacked against them in their universe, whether it be live action or illustrated, they find a way to win the day.
One psychologist from the Ukraine realized just how helpful these fictional characters were to her as she went through a bout with bullying in her childhood and turned it into a mode of therapy. From that came a nationally acclaimed book, “Superhero Therapy”.
Dr. Janina Scarlet has created the concept of Superhero Therapy. She describes it as “incorporating superheroes and other pop culture in evidence-based, which means research-supported, therapy to help people recover from depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder. Now
At the age of 3, Dr. Scarlet and her family were exposed to harmful radiation from the Chernobyl disaster. Her health was severely impacted and she still combats lasting symptoms from the exposure in her everyday life more than 30 years later.
