Final food fest before Greek Islands Cafe closes

A well known restaurant in Seaport Village opened by a former San Diego television personality is closing this weekend.

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - A well known restaurant in Seaport Village opened by a former San Diego television personality is closing this weekend.

In Friday's Zevely Zone, Jeff visited the Greek Islands Café.

Melissa Moore is the daughter of Jerry G. Bishop - the longtime television personality for Sun Up San Diego. Jerry opened his café nearly 40 years ago. He passed away in 2013, which makes it even harder for Melissa to say so long to Seaport Village.

The new landlord at Seaport Village is the Port of San Diego - which did not offer Greek Islands Café a new lease for good reason and that is catching customers off guard.

According to the Port of San Diego, because of a pending litigation, the restaurant was never offered a new deal and has to close. A spokesperson told News 8 the business owes an estimate $200,000 in back rent and damages. Asaggio Pizza was closed by the Health Department.

Melissa hopes to clear up the legal challenges and reopen the restaurant in another location.

If you would like to visit Greek Islands Café one last time, they will be open all weekend and close Sunday at 9 p.m.
