Body found inside home after fire in El Cajon

One person was found dead inside a home in El Cajon as crews battled a house fire.

EL CAJON (CNS) - Firefighters responding to a house fire in El Cajon Thursday found a man in his late 70s dead inside a bedroom, officials said.

Dispatchers received reports of a fire shortly before 5:30 a.m. at a house in the 900 block of South Magnolia Avenue, Heartland Fire & Rescue public information officer Mark Casey said.

Firefighters responded to the fire and learned there was a person still inside the house.

Crews attempted rescue while also extinguishing the flames, but they found the man dead inside a bedroom near the front door, Casey said.

The cause of death was not immediately determined.

Crews knocked down the flames in around 20 minutes, Casey said.

The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the structure and personal property, Casey said.

Three women inside the house were displaced and the Red Cross was called in to help them, Casey said.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The El Cajon Police Department tweeted that Magnolia Avenue between Renette Avenue and Chase Avenue was shut down during the incident.
