Injured deer runs onto playground at Scripps Ranch school

Students at a charter school in Scripps Ranch received quite a shock when an injured deer stumbled onto the playground.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Students at a charter school in Scripps Ranch received quite a shock when an injured deer stumbled onto the playground.

The animal was spotted late Tuesday morning at the Innovations Academy on Spring Canyon Road.

Second and third graders, who were at recess, were rushed into classrooms while teachers tried to help out the deer, which appeared to have slammed into a planter box.

"And the back legs, it was not moving the back legs. It was trying to get up on its front legs over and over and over again," explained Tonnie Velazquez innovations academy co-teacher. "And we put a blanket over it…seemed to calm down after that, but still shaking kind of had some foam at the mouth."

Animal control picked up the deer and took it to a pet emergency hospital in La Mesa. Unfortunately, the animal was injured trying to jump through the fence and its back legs were paralyzed. The deer had to be put down.
