City of Carlsbad takes action over infested hoarder house

The city is working to put the property into receivership after it was deemed a public nuisance and uninhabitable.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The City of Carlsbad is taking action over a so-called hoarder house in a neighborhood off of Carlsbad Village Drive.

It's been an ongoing issue. The City of Carlsbad has given the property owner multiple violation notices. The woman who owns the condo here was warned about the accumulation of trash and its potential health and safety concerns.

"It's been a concern for neighbors over a longer course of time," said neighbor Kyle of the property located at 3105 Via Sombra.

Kyle moved in next door a year and a half ago. He shares a wall with the property that the city of Carlsbad is now trying to put into receivership.

"Potential hoarding is what I've heard. People are here from time to time checking on the neighbor. I know she's had some trouble maybe taking care of herself," he said.

The city's complaint says the property has been deemed a public nuisance since 2019. At that time the city had gotten multiple complaints.

City inspections found piles of junk and debris. The inspection also found evidence of a rodent infestation and several rooms damp and at risk for mold.

"That's definitely a cause of concern because we do share a wall. We had to do things like termite inspections annually and I'm not sure if that's been done at that residence," he said.

Inspections deemed the property uninhabitable. In November 2023, a notice and order to vacate and clean up the building was issued.

Last month, a three-day notice for receivership letter was posted on the property. The city says it's given the property owner a reasonable amount of time to comply.
