Watch out for unauthorized water notices in San Diego

The City of San Diego is warning residents about unauthorized water notices posted on people's doors.

SAN DIEGO — Beware of unauthorized water notices. The city of San Diego is warning of "water quality" notices posted on people's homes in the South Bay.

The city is receiving reports from people finding water quality flyers on their homes. Many of these reports are from people living in Imperial Beach and Otay Mesa areas.

"We don't know who these people are. whether they're legitimate or not but you should always be weary of providing your private information to anybody," said Jose Ysea, a spokesperson for the city of San Diego.

Ysea said the "water update" notice is from a private company with no association with the city of San Diego.

"When it comes to water quality, we take that very seriously and we're going to be on top of any issues that we may have. Right now we have no issues," he said.

The flyer tells residents to "Please call ASAP." However, Ysea said people contacted by the company are urged to not give their information and to not follow through with the service. The company isn't authorized to do work for the city

"We can assure you. You really don't need any of these products. All of our tap water, like I said, has good taste and meets all regulations state and federal," he said.

Keep in mind that the city will never request access to your home to test water quality. Ysea also said a city notice will have the city logo and be delivered by city personnel with proper identification. It's also a good idea to check phone numbers to make sure they're legitimate. To report anything suspicious, call the Sa Diego Police Department non-emergency line.
