SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pit bull and a boxer escaped from their owner's yard and attacked a woman as she walked her three dogs in a Grant Hill-area neighborhood Friday, leaving her with a minor facial injury.
The aggressive dogs charged the woman and went after one of her pets -- a Shetland sheepdog -- in the 400 block of 28th Street about 10:45 a.m., according to the county Department of Animal Services.
When the woman tried to protect her sheltie, one of the fighting-breed dogs nipped her on the face, DAS spokesman Dan DeSousa said.
A short time later, two men driving through the area pulled over and were able to stop the attack.
Police officers summoned to the scene called in animal-control personnel, who rounded up the boxer and pit bull and transported them to a county shelter, DeSousa said.
The victim declined medical attention and took her sheepdog, which apparently was not seriously injured, to a veterinarian for evaluation.
The impounded dogs will undergo a 10-day rabies quarantine. Following the precautionary observation period, the dogs' owner will have a chance to reclaim them. Otherwise, they will likely be euthanized, according to DeSousa.
It was unclear which of the dogs bit the woman, he said.
Last weekend, a 75-year-old Paradise Hills woman was attacked and mauled in her yard by a neighbor's two escaped pit bull terriers. Her injuries were so severe that doctors had to amputate her left leg.
The dogs were taken to a shelter and put down.
