DEL MAR (CBS 8) - Dozens of high school students took part Tuesday in San Diego's first ever countywide high school culinary competition.
Twelve top culinary teams faced off at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for their biggest challenge ever. Some of the judges were blown away by the performances.
"You're looking to see if they have more than just clumping of food on a plate. If they thought about different colors and textures, you need you know a little bit of acid with the fats, you need to balance it all out. These kids are light years ahead of where I ever was," Troy Johnson of San Diego Magazine said.
The Fallbrook High School team took home the title. They created a "Louisiana taste" dish that had pan-roasted duck, mashed potatoes with crab, and a homemade sweet and fiery Cajun cream sauce.
