SAN DIEGO — An unseasonable late-spring hot spell kept the San Diego area sweltering for a third straight day Wednesday.
A high-pressure zone that has been camped out over the region this workweek generated temperatures in the high 70s to mid-90s along the coast, the low 90s to 101 across the inland valleys, the low 80s to the mid-90s in the mountains and up to 108 degrees in the deserts, according to the National Weather Service.
The lofty thermometer readings included several records -- 99 degrees in El Cajon, exceeding the former all-time high of 94 for June 10, set in 1993; and 80 degrees at Oceanside Harbor (76, 1966). Chula Vista, for its part, tied its maximum mercury mark of 86 degrees for today's date, a milestone last reached in the South Bay city 41 years ago.
Conditions are expected to remain sultry through Thursday, after which the county will enjoy a cool-down as onshore flow strengthens and the marine layer deepens, meteorologists advised.
