SAN DIEGO — Karthik Venkataraman is a sports anchor and reporter for CBS 8 in San Diego, CA.
Karthik Venkataraman fell in love with sports at a young age after watching Michael Jordan play on TV. After that he asked his dad for a basketball hoop and would pretend to be Jordan in his driveway.
His love for sports always stayed with him, but he initially chose to pursue a career in the medical field at East Tennessee State University. In his senior year, a great time to decide to switch career paths, he felt his true passion was sports journalism. He taught himself how to tell stories for local news and, without a degree, landed jobs as a news journalist near his hometown of Bristol, Tennessee.
He realized if he ever wanted to succeed in this new industry, he’d need to go to school. In 2018, he graduated from Syracuse University with a Master’s in Broadcast Digital Journalism with a Sports Communication Emphasis.
Before coming to San Diego, he worked in Omaha, Nebraska as a Cross Platform Sports Producer, then in Spokane, Washington as a Sports Anchor and Journalist and most recently in Knoxville, Tennessee as a Sports Director.
Karthik has had a lot of fun experiences as a sports journalist, but what he enjoys the most is telling stories in the community. He is excited to do that in San Diego.
