SAN DIEGO — CBS 8 got a behind-the-scenes look at soulful dishes and specialty cocktails at Louisiana Purchase in North Park as the restaurant celebrates Broadway's "The Wiz" coming to San Diego.
"The Wiz" is back on its first tour in 40 years. The revival is making a stop in San Diego before its debut on Broadway.
The musical reimagines the story of Dorothy with an entirely African American cast infused with gospel and soul.
"'The Wiz' is iconic, so when I heard they are coming to town, I was like, 'oh, man, this is a great opportunity. Wow!'" said Culinary Director Chef "Chef Q" Quinnton Austin.
Louisiana Purchase, a New Orleans inspired restaurant in North Park, is joining forces with the Broadway show by creating special dishes and cocktails. The master mixologist and beverage director Rob McShea made a special cocktail called "The Wicked Witch of the West."
"Mary J. Blige's black dress is what I used as inspiration and as my muse," said McShea. "I took some tequila, which gives it crazy deep blue coloring, and added strawberry and lime and margarita and black salt and a garnish,"
Chef Q flexed his creole culinary finesse to present "The Cowardly Lion."
"'The Cowardly Lion' is spicy chicken with a little ghost pepper, and our mac and cheese with our cornbread when we kicked it up a notch!" said Chef Q.
Both Wiz-inspired items will be available for a limited time until Sunday.
"Come to Louisiana Purchase, get your food, get The Cowardly Lion, get The Wicked Witch of the West and you go to the show, and try not to fall asleep because you're gonna be really full," laughed Chef Q.
Opening night is 7 p.m. Tuesday at the San Diego Civic Theatre. The show runs in San Diego until Sunday. Tickets are still available.
