ENCINITAS, Calif. — Looking for holiday activities to enjoy in San Diego?
Explore the whimsical winter nature inside The San Diego Botanic Garden's Lightscape starting Friday Nov. 15 through Jan. 5.
The Botanic Garden, located at 300 Quail Gardens Dr. in Encinitas, will feature brand-new installations from international artists including a "Flame Skimmer Dragonfly" and "Bluebonnets."
Visited before? You might see some returning favorites including the Winter Cathedral and California Poppies.
But leave your pets home for this night stroll. Furry friends are not allowed.
Dates and times
Lightscape will be open:
- November 15-17, 20-24, 27-30
- December 1, 4-5, 6-8, 11-12, 13-31* excluding holidays
- January 1-5
Lightscape will be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Tickets and parking
- Prices are generally between $16-$34, vary by day and time
- Tickets are free for children under 2
- Military members including, active, reserve, retired, veterans and families with ID get a discount
- Tickets are nonrefundable
- Advance parking is $10 or $15 per car
- Parking increases by $10 on the night of the event
The trail, what to wear
The Botanic Garden encourages folks to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress warm for the chilly winter temps.

The trail takes an 1-1.5 hours to complete and sometimes goes up steep inclines. The one mile path visitors walk on contains both paved and dirt roads.
Snacks and drinks
You can't bring in your hot cocoa from Starbucks, but the venue will have snacks like hand pies and seasonal alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages such as hot cocoa.
