Black Friday deals are already here — find out where to shop

While we usually lean toward big companies such as Amazon and Target for our holiday deals, WalletHub found JCPenney to have the best discounts this Black Friday.

SAN DIEGO — Thanksgiving is still more than a week away, but stores are already having Black Friday sales. WalletHub released its take on the top ten best places to get a good deal and what you should buy there.

You might think big companies such as Amazon, Target and Walmart have the best deals — but those companies aren't even in the top three.

Here's the top stores with the best black Friday discounts:

  1. JCPenney- average discount of 76%, best place to buy apparel and accessories, consumer electronics, toys, appliances.
  2. Belk- average discount of 73%, best place to buy jewelry, all other product categories.
  3. Macy's- average discount of 57%, best place to buy furniture.
  4. Kohl's- average discount of 44%, best place to buy computers and phones, consumer packaged goods.
  5. Walmart- average discount of 38%.
  6. The Home Depot- average discount of 32.4%.
  7. Amazon- average discount of 32.05%.
  8. BJ's- average discount of 28.9%.
  9. Target- average discount of 28.7%.
  10. Best Buy- average discount of 28.4%.

Wallethub says the overall average Black Friday discount is 38% off. Writer and analyst Chip Lupo says to aim for this percent or higher to avoid marketing traps.

"Your big discounts are going to be on computers and phones, jewelry and apparel and accessories, consumer electronics and appliances and toys," Lupo said.

If you're in the market for some bling, Wallethub found the most discounted item overall this black Friday will be jewelry with an average of 60% savings.

Just don't forget to make a budget and a list and try your best to avoid impulse purchases.

It's very easy to get lured into some of those alternate deals," Lupo said. "And again, you might wind up with something that you don't want, don't need, and might not be getting the deal that you originally thought you would."
