"It just started getting higher and higher" | Carlsbad man receives SDG&E bill over $1,000

Sina Shayesteh lives in a 1300 square foot townhome.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — A Carlsbad man says he’s frustrated after receiving his latest SDG&E bill, which was more than $1,000.

Sina Shayesteh bought a two bedroom, two bath, 1,300 square foot townhouse in Carlsbad back in August. Since then, his SDG&E bills have risen every single month going from $294 to now over a thousand.

“It just started getting higher and higher and last month it was probably the highest. It's very frustrating from a consumer point of view," said Shayesteh.

Shayesteh lives with his brother. He works from home, and says he uses the heater often, but feels as though there haven't been any major changes on his end to support a thousand dollar bill, adding he considers his usage normal.

“And I have a nest which is supposed to adjust based on you know usage,” said Shayesteh.

He reached out to SDG&E, and said the person he spoke with didn't give him the help he needed.

“She was just telling me, 'I'm trying to help you' and I said basically you're telling me to shut off my electricity. I kept asking her maybe something is wrong with my meter? Can you have someone come over and she's like no one can do anything," said Shayesteh.

Shayesteh persisted.

“After asking four to five times, she finally agreed to have somebody sent over. It was an act of Congress to get somebody to come and take a look at the meter,” said Shayesteh.

According to SDG&E, a technician did come out last week.

A company spokesperson tells CBS 8 Shayesteh's meter was tested, with no problems found.

Since the screen on his old meter was damaged, a new meter was put in, and that one tested normal as well.

SDG&E now has its Senior Call Center leadership investigating the matter.

After CBS 8 reached out to the company, they have since called Shayesteh and scheduled a whole house audit to figure out why his bill is so high.
