SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Ten people were rescued from the water near the Mission Beach lifeguard tower Wednesday after they were caught in a strong rip current.

Lifeguards say the group arrived together on a bus and immediately ran into the water. Within seconds, 10 of them were struggling against the current.

It took five lifeguards to get everyone out of the water safely.

"That whole scenario could have been avoided if the people that came to the beach, instead of running to the closest water spot, if they would have just checked with the lifeguard, slowed things down, it would have been a safer day for them," Lt. Nick Lerma said.

If you get caught in a rip current, lifeguards say it's important to try to relax and swim parallel to the beach.
