SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Testimony got under way Wednesday in a preliminary hearing for two documented gang members charged in connection with a 12-hour crime spree that included the near-fatal beating of an 18-year-old Northridge man near San Diego State.
Terrence Lavar Jarvis, 27, and David Daniel White, 21, are suspected of mugging and bludgeoning Grant Richman in the 4600 block of Antioch Place shortly after 12:30 a.m. last Dec. 28.
Richman, a UC Berkeley freshman at the time of the attack, was not initially expected to survive. He was attacked shortly after arriving in the College Area to spend the night at a friend's home, police said.
Richman's parents have told reporters that their son suffered severe brain trauma for which he has undergone extensive rehabilitation therapy.
According to court testimony, the 12-hour crime spree began about 2:30 p.m. Dec. 27 in Emerald Hills, where a man received a "disciplinary" gang-related beating in front of a home.
At 11:30 p.m., a woman was robbed at gunpoint in Mountain View. About an hour later, two men tried to rob another woman on El Cajon Boulevard in Rolando, police said.
Minutes later, Richman was attacked as he got out of his car outside his friend's house, prosecutors said.
At 2:30 a.m., shots were fired at the house in Emerald Hills where the crime spree began, according to court testimony.
Jarvis was arrested a day after the attack on Richman in connection with a different crime. Police said Jarvis violated his parole and committed domestic violence, leading to his arrest in the 7100 block of Jacmar Avenue in
Skyline on Dec. 29. He has been in custody ever since.
On Jan. 17, White was taken into custody in Mesa, Ariz., for an alleged probation violation and later extradited to San Diego. Police announced on Jan. 25 that detectives had tied the defendants to the attack on Richman.
According to jail records, Jarvis is charged with felony charges of attempted murder, robbery, attempted robbery, shooting at an inhabited dwelling or vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen vehicle.
White faces felony charges of attempted murder, robbery, attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and shooting at an inhabited dwelling or vehicle.
Jarvis faces 157 years to life in prison if convicted, according to prosecutor Christopher Lawson, while White would face more than 83 years to life behind bars.
At the end of the preliminary hearing, which resumes Thursday morning, Judge Kenneth So will determine whether enough evidence was presented for the defendants to stand trial.
