Amber Alert suspect arrested in Mexico; infant found safe

CBS News 8 has learned that the California Highway Patrol has picked up cell phone activity related to an Amber Alert along Interstate 805 south of Balboa.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Authorities Wednesday reported that Amber Alert suspect Mesut Guler was taken into custody in Mexico. His infant son Henry was found safe.

Police say that Guler was stopped at a Mexican checkpoint near the Mexico-Arizona border and questioned by authorities. From there, Mexican authorities got a hold of Border Patrol agents in Arizona. Those agents found out there was a warrant for Guler's arrest and took him into custody.

CHP worked numerous calls in the San Diego area with reported sightings of Guler's vehicle. The 22-year-old's cell phone was pinged in San Diego Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sunnyvale police said Guler had connections in Mexico and they operated as if that was where he wanted to take his son. It's unclear how he made it past the border, or if he switched vehicles to get across. One of the places where his GMC Envoy was reportedly spotted was in National City near several car dealerships.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A statewide Amber Alert has been issued for a newborn who is only a few weeks old. The man authorities are looking for is the child's father and they think he's headed for the border.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the cellphone of the father suspected of abducting his son was pinged close to midnight near Interstate 805 between Balboa Avenue and State Route 163.

Twenty-two-year-old Mesut Guler is suspected of taking his son Henry Guler-Romero, who's just a few weeks old, around 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday from Sunnyvale, which is in Santa Clara County  in northern California.

San Jose media outlets are also reporting that Guler may have had an argument with the baby's mother, then took the child and said he was going to leave the state.

So far, San Diego authorities have received three calls about this statewide Amber Alert.

Guler is described as Turkish, 6 feet tall and 120 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

He may be driving a tan 2004 GMC Envoy with a large American eagle on the rear window.

The California license plate number is 6HIL892.

There were two other possible sightings of Guler's truck Wednesday morning. One sighting was in Hillcrest and the other was in National City.

The CHP asks anyone who spots the man or the vehicle to call 911.
