SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The San Diego City Council and the Burn Institute are kicking off the holiday season with the annual fire prevention awareness campaign.
First, if you plan to use your fireplace, make sure the flue is open and properly cleaned, and don't burn anything except wood.
Another important thing to remember this season is to look out for your elderly loved ones. At 65 or older, you are twice as likely to die in a house fire than the rest of the population.
"So this Christmas, if you are out there visiting grandma and grandpa, really one of the best gifts you can give them is checking their smoke alarm, their carbon monoxide, making sure they have one. And if they don't, give it to them as a gift. You could actually save your grandparent's life," City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf said.
They also suggest switching to flameless candles to lower the risk of fire.
