SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man riding a bicycle was seriously injured when his bike was struck by a female driver as she turned onto a freeway onramp in the Grantville area of San Diego, a police officer said Saturday.
The collision took place about 6:18 p.m. Friday near 5600 Fairmont Avenue and an I-8 onramp, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford.
A woman in her 50s was driving a 2005 Buick SUV southbound on Fairmont Avenue when she came upon the bicyclist, also in his 50s, according to Stafford.
As the bicyclist rode past the onramp to I-8, his bike was struck by the SUV, which was turning onto the ramp, Stafford said.
The bike rider suffered fractured ribs and a skull fracture and was transported to a trauma center in serious condition, according to Stafford.
The driver stopped at the scene and alcohol was not a factor, Stafford said.
The SDPD Traffic Division was investigating the collision, he said.
