Big rig crash blocks carpool lane on I-15 in Mira Mesa

A Sig Alert has been issued on southbound I- 15 near Mira Mesa Boulevard. A fully loaded big rig overturned and was blocking the HOV lane and two left lanes.

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - A big rig truck loaded with furniture overturned on southbound Interstate 15 and burst into flames in Mira Mesa Thursday morning.

The big rig hit the center divider and rolled onto its side in the southbound carpool lanes near Mira Mesa Boulevard around 4:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says somehow the driver made it out safely.

"Fortunately the driver got out and was transported to Palomar Hospital before the rig caught on fire," Jake Sanchez, CHP said.

Officers say the driver was going about 55 miles per hour when he lost control.

The crash prompted a closure of the HOV lanes and two other southbound lanes. The trailer was righted and the lanes were later reopened, but traffic remained backed up in the area as CHP worked to reopen lanes during morning rush hour.

An investigation is underway into what caused the crash.
