SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - We're all familiar with snowbirds, people who move from cold locations to warmer ones in the winter. But San Diego's warm climate is attracting snowbirds of a different feather.
San Diego is a great place for bird watching, looking for raptors, and within minutes of us arriving at the grassland we spot one, then two and then three red tail hawks and there numbers are growing.
Changing weather patterns and the lack of prey is the signal for the hawks to start migrating south.
San Diego is the permanent and wintering home to multiple species of raptor that will set up shop just about anywhere.
Males are a third less in size than females. In the mornings the birds tend to stay low and in the afternoon they soar on the thermal looking for prey.
Another great location for multiple sightings is in and around Sweetwater Summit Camp.
