SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A California Highway Patrol officer whose car was struck on the shoulder of Interstate 15 in Scripps Ranch Tuesday was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

The officer, whose name was not made public, was preparing to re-enter the freeway when a 1990 Toyota Corolla driven by a 70-year-old El Cajon man veered across northbound lanes and hit the patrol car near Carroll Canyon Road about 6:15 a.m., CHP public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez said.

"The officer had not had time ... to put on his seat belt and was thrown about (inside) the vehicle," Sanchez said.

The CHP officer was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla to be treated for what the CHP called moderately serious injuries.

"The errant driver sustained minor injuries and was released after it was determined he was not under the influence," Sanchez said.
