Chula Vista police officer shoots armed robbery suspect

A man suspected of robbing a CVS Pharmacy at gunpoint was wounded in a shootout with a Chula Vista patrolman early Monday, police said.

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man suspected of robbing a South Bay drugstore early Monday was wounded a short time later in a shootout with a patrolman, authorities reported.

The officer-involved shooting near the intersection of C Street and Fourth Ave. in Chula Vista occurred about 1:30 a.m., according to police.

The patrolman was responding to a report of an armed robbery at a CVS Pharmacy when he spotted a suspect near the business, Capt. Gary Wedge said.

The suspect allegedly opened fire on the patrolman, prompting him to return fire.

Medics took the suspect to a hospital for treatment of at least one gunshot wound. His name and condition were not immediately available.

Though the exchange of gunfire was a "pretty traumatic event," the involved officer was unhurt and coping well, the captain said.

Traffic lanes were closed in the area to allow for investigations until shortly after 10:30 a.m., Lt. Buddy Magor said.
