SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 55-year-old man was badly burned Saturday when he tried to extinguish a fire that broke out on a container ship about 30 miles west of San Diego on its way to Mazatlan, Mexico, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.
Other crew members aboard the Motor Vessel Jupiter notified the Coast Guard about 1 p.m. to report the man sustained serious burns while trying to put out the fire aboard the cargo ship, according to Petty Officer 1st Class Henry Dunphy.
The injured man was hoisted into a Coast Guard helicopter about 3:50 p.m. and he was taken to the Coast Guard base on Harbor Drive before being turned over to paramedics, Dunphy said.
The cause of fire was unknown, but the other crew members extinguished it, Dunphy said.
No other injuries or other complications from the fire were reported, Dunphy said.
