High school teacher runs 350 miles in honor of former student

Giving Tuesday started early for a North County teacher, for the past week he's ran 50 miles each day to benefit unhoused youth.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — From sunrise to sunset, high school teacher Kevin Hopp has dedicated Thanksgiving week to running 50 miles each day.

“Me being able to use the running to help other people makes it less selfish to me and honestly even though I'm saying it's selfish, its my self-care and makes me a better person at the end of the day,” Hopp said.

Molly’s Angels is a foundation dedicated to Hopp’s former student, Molly Belinsky.

"He was Molly's hero, he was there for her when nobody else was. He spent the time in high school as like a mentor and she had such wonderful stories about him," Molly’s Angels Foundation CEO & Founder,  Sheila Weinstock-Belinsky said.

This run pays tribute to Molly and helps a good cause.

“It's just keeping her memory alive and keeping her name in the community,” Hopp said.

To add to the impact, Molly’s Angels Foundation is donating a dollar for every mile Hopp and his team collectively run.

The money will go towards benefiting the Monarch School, the only public school in the U.S. designed to serve unhoused students.

“Molly isn't alive but I want to keep her memory alive and helping other people in her spirit,” Weinstock-Belinsky said.

Kevin has been documenting his journey on Instagram @hoppcantstop, he tells CBS 8 that he’s received an overwhelming amount of support.

“It's hard to process right now being so tired,” Hopp said.

Kevin says he will be out Sunday night with lamps and surrounded by his friends as he completes 350 total miles.
