Mira Mesa residents voice concerns in community meeting

San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer hosts meet and greet for Mira Mesa residents.

SAN DIEGO — Residents gathered at San Diego Miramar college to meet San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer, in an effort to voice their concerns on issues affecting them.

“I just think it's really important for me to be out there speaking to my constituents, hearing what the biggest issues are on their mind so that we as a county can be responsive,” Lawson-Remer said.

It's an opportunity to connect with the Mira Mesa community and to understand resident's concerns.

“My main concern is homelessness,” Mira Mesa resident Mindy Sonen said.

Lawson-Remer said progress is being made, they’ve built hundreds of new beds with services for people in the community without a home.

“We’re moving for a lot of these kind of pilot programs to try to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place , diversion programs and rent subsidies,” Lawson-Remer said.

Keeping communities safe from the opioid crisis is a priority for Lawson-Remer. Funds from an opioid lawsuit settlement will go towards the community.

“We’re going to have about 120 million dollars now to be investing in tackling the fentanyl crisis, everything from education to interdiction,” Lawson-Remer said.

Residents also received an update on the Mira Mesa Epicentre, its a place that's been closed for several years.

“Unfortunately because it's because its a vacant building, it's become a magnet for crime,” Sonen said.

In the coming future, the center will be available for residents. Its events like these that help leaders understand the needs of the community they serve.

“We’ve invested already about eight million dollars in getting this epicentre up and running and it's just going to be amazing for young people in Mira Mesa,”  Lawson-Remer said.

Lawson-Remer said the its in the process of wrapping up the design phase. The Mira Mesa Epicentre is expected to break ground in the fall of 2024.
