New regulations for pedicabs, motorized scooters, and bikes along the bayfront

To ensure public safety, motorized mobility devices will soon have new restrictions on where they can operate.

SAN DIEGO — Pedicabs are a unique way to get around and enjoy San Diego’s sights along the bayfront.

“I think it adds to a fun experience getting to and from here to downtown to gaslamp,” Hannah Corriveau said.

In a few weeks, motorized mobility devices like electric bikes, motorized pedicabs, and motorized scooters will not be allowed in pedestrian zones like piers, sidewalks, and plazas.

“You're walking and all of a sudden they’ll be right behind you and stuff,” San Diego visitor, Marie Pierre said.

The San Diego Board of Port Commissioners said they approved these new regulations to keep people safe. On top of keeping walkways clear, the changes also prohibit loud music from pedicabs. For residents in the area, it's something too common for them.

“I see them a lot down here, sometimes they can be pretty loud. But sometimes they seem to be full of people having fun and just doing their thing,” San Diego Resident Amber Smet said.

Some people hope this change does not ruin business for pedicab workers.

“I don't know, we’ll see. I just hope that the pedicabs themselves that they are getting, still getting their wage you know that whatever they make,” Corriveau said.

To accommodate pedicabs and other riders, the port will have a motorized and pedal-only route with staging areas for pick-up and drop-off.

“They are a little crazy on the sidewalks especially down here we kind of have to avoid them,” Corriveau said.

In a statement by Port of San Diego Guest Experiences Manager  Kristine Love said, “There is more to see, do and experience on the bayfront than ever before which means more people are visiting and enjoying our San Diego Bay waterfront. Public safety is the Port of San Diego’s highest priority. The new pedicab program and public safety regulations for all motorized mobility devices including pedicabs, allows for a safe, enjoyable, and welcoming bayfront for all. The new regulations support responsible pedicab owners and operators while establishing clearly designated pedicab routes.”

Port of San Diego Harbor Police will start enforcing the new rules starting December 14. To learn more about the new regulations visit portofsandiego.org
