'Beautiful patchwork of our community' | Cathedral shines rainbow lights ahead of San Diego Pride

Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral hosted the ‘Light up the Cathedral’ event in Bankers Hill to kick off celebrations for the LGBTQ+ community.

SAN DIEGO — Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral lit up in rainbow colors Wednesday night. It's an annual celebration setting off pride festivities happening throughout San Diego. The Bankers Hill event has grown in attendance throughout the years.

“Next year it will be ten years, I can't believe it myself,” Light up the Cathedral Co-Coordinator Susan Jester said.

The celebration began with a service, music and speeches before attendees could make their way outside to see the cathedral light up in vibrant colors. For some people in attendance, it's what the colors represent that makes tonight so special.

“I think it just fills me with a lot of love, that's what I think about is wow this is God's love just like shining over us and all these different colors that represent the diversity and the beautiful patchwork of our community,” Jester said.

Attendees were treated to performances from the San Diego's Women's Choir, Pride Pop-Up Orchestra and LGBTQ+ performers.

‘Light up the Cathedral' is meant to bring the community together in a welcoming space for everyone.

“I am really excited that we can do this, that we have a community that is so inclusive and open that all our welcome not only to come into the building but to participate to be part of our leadership,” St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral Senior Pastor The Very Reverend Penny Bridges said.

St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral welcomes a bigger crowd year after year, with next year being the 10th year anniversary there might be an even bigger celebration.

“I turned 80 in December so I'm just taking it one year at a time now but I expect next year to make it a huge celebration,” Jester said.

The San Diego Pride parade is this Saturday. Bridges tells CBS 8 that there will be a service on Normal Street before the parade begins.
