CBS 8 showcases Hispanic Heritage Month across San Diego.
CBS 8 honored Hispanic Heritage Month during September and October. We visited Chula Vista as the city hosted 'El Grito' to celebrate Mexican Independence Day, we spoke with the Port of San Diego Harbor Police Chief Magda Fernandez who was named as one of the top 50 Latino leaders of influence for 2024 and we celebrated Dia de Muertos across San Diego County.
Helping families, immigrants
The Parents as Teachers International Conference was held in San Diego at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina with more than 2,000 people in attendance. The conference focuses on helping parents and their children succeed, including immigrant families who have just moved here. More >>

Latino Leader of Influence
The San Diego Business Journal and San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce named the top 50 Latino leaders of influence for 2024. Among the recipients was Port of San Diego Harbor Police Chief Magda Fernandez. Fernandez was appointed chief in 2022. She's the first Latina chief for Harbor Police, as well as the first Latina top cop in all of San Diego County. More >>

Dementia among Latinos
There’s growing concern over a significant increase in Alzheimer’s and dementia for people within the Latino community. Alzheimer’s San Diego says between 2019 and 2040, the number of Latinos over 65 with dementia will grow by an estimated 196%, making them among the minority groups more likely to see the largest increase in the coming years.
