SAN DIEGO — The owner of Las Cuatro Milpas in Barrio Logan is clearing up rumors of a potential closure.
An unsubstantiated article claimed the restaurant could close as early as January or February because the church next door was in the process of buying it.
One of the owners told CBS 8 that's not entirely true and said they’re not closing.
Tita, as she's known, says she's the oldest out of several family members who own the historic restaurant. Despite her saying the restaurant isn't closing, she did confirm someone is trying to buy it.
"We still haven't sold anything and nobody has talked prices or anything,” said Tita.
CBS 8 asked Tita if they would be selling the restaurant.
“We don't know. We don't know when. We might have to sell because there's too many in the family," said Tita.
CBS 8 checked with the County Assessor's Office and found the property is still owned by their family trust.
Over the past 24 hours, Tita says she's been fielding questions and calls from as far as Italy. In some cases, people were in tears.
"They don't want us to go away. They don't want us to disappear," said Tita.
The rumors also prompted a bigger crowd at the restaurant Tuesday, with people lining up thinking it was their last chance.
“I was sad and devastated," said Ori Valenzuela.
"I couldn't believe it. At first, I was like I need to go because they said they were gonna close next year," said Francisco Sanchez.
Las Cuatro Milpas has served homemade Mexican cuisine for 91 years.
It's a staple in the Barrio Logan community, with a reputation that has spread well beyond San Diego.
Oftentimes, food is sold out before the lunch hour even begins.
"It tastes like your grandparents made it and it’s cheap," said Valenzuela, who bought seven dozen tortillas to take to friends in New York.
For now, you can still come and enjoy Las Cuatro Milpas. For how long, we're not sure.
Just make sure you bring cash because cards aren’t accepted, as well as your patience since you won't be the only one.
