Market on 8th celebrates culinary diversity, community in National City

The space is filled with a variety of local food vendors, focuses on community and has affordable prices at $15 or less.

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — When you walk into Market on 8th, you're entering a world of food right in National City. From Thai food to coffee to lots of tacos, this spot has something for everyone. And, everything is $15 or less.

Owner Roger Canez wants to cater to the community.

"Every single family can stop at the market for one stop for everything," he said. "They can have, pizza, burgers, tacos, whatever they want, and my goal is to give the families affordable prices."

Kiko's Place has been around for 70 years and was even featured on Netflix. Carnitas Quiroga offers $1.99 tacos for Taco Tuesday. Among the list of diverse vendors is Xi-Cali, serving Mexicali style Chinese food.

"So basically we use the same spices on Mexican and Chinese food and a real combination is when those both collide," said Chef Eric.

While serving the community, the food hall is also supporting the community. Chanez said Market on 8th generated more than 120 jobs.

"So every single vendor we have, like plumber or anything, is going to be from National City," Canez said. "I mean, we want to support the community."

National City has a special place in Roger's heart. He lived across the street when he moved to the U.S. in 2010.

"National City has something else that gives a lot of like heritage for us, I was feeling like a little part of Mexico is right here," he said.

An added bonus for National City residents is a 10% discount with a valid ID, and 15% off for military.

"My goal is to continue doing what we do best, give entertainment, give families and of course, our goal is for everybody who stopped at the market to eat amazing."
