Our Lady of Guadalupe in Barrio Logan | Latino Catholics celebrate in San Diego

The celebration brings together dozens of people for prayers, processions, music, authentic food and dance to honor her enduring legacy.

SAN DIEGO — The celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe remains a vibrant and cherished tradition intertwining faith, culture, and history.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is an important figure in the Catholic faith. According to legend, she appeared to a man named Juan Diego in Mexico in 1531.

Members of Our Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan bring flowers and candles as a way to show devotion and respect to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

"No offense to Jesus, but this is bigger than Christmas. More people come to church today than Christmas. Why? Because their people were visited by God in 1531 that’s why its such a big deal," said Father Scott Santarosa, Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

People celebrate her every year on December 12.

The event brings together dozens of people for prayers, processions, music, authentic food and dance to honor her enduring legacy.

They also sell Our Lady of Guadalupe statues and candles.

"It's special for me to show my kids my traditions; my Mexican traditions. We are accustomed to living in the United States and we want to show to our kids and have them show their kids," said Mirna Ramirez, member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

Many are showing Our Lady of Guadalupe gratitude for answering their prayers.

"To me, it's very emotional and important; she is my mother and will always by my side and in the hardest moments of my life, she has answered my prayers and gave me strength," said Our Lady of Guadalupe church member, Bertha Olivas.

A special day for unity, hope and faith worldwide.

"It brings me tears this day, tears of joy, gladness and gratitude," said Pastor Santarosa.
