Seniors shine on stage in improv class

Seniors in San Diego are taking center stage in an improv class called Active Minds, where they challenge themselves to think quickly and creatively.

SAN DIEGO — A group of seniors is proving that age is just a number. Every Wednesday, they gather at Unscripted Learning the non-profit spin-off of National Comedy Theatre in San Diego-- to participate in an improv class called Active Minds

Led by NCT cast member Dave George, the Active Minds class aims to keep seniors mentally sharp and active. The games played in the class allow participants to put their minds to work while having fun and challenging themselves. There are no right or wrong answers in improv, and the class emphasizes the importance of not taking oneself too seriously.

During my visit to the class, I was invited on stage to try out improv for myself. Initially nervous, I quickly found the experience to be exciting, challenging, and a great way to focus my mind. The atmosphere was supportive and encouraging, with participants cheering on each other.

The Active Minds class is a diverse group, consisting of retirees as well as individuals who still work. Former paralegals, court reporters, drug and alcohol counselors, and special needs teachers, among others, make up this dynamic group. They emphasize that no acting experience is necessary to join the class; the only requirement is to have a willingness to let go, be silly, and have fun.

The benefits of the Active Minds class extend beyond the stage. Participants report refreshing mental stimulation, increased confidence, and a sense of belonging within the community. The class meets once a week on Wednesdays, but due to popular demand, a new class will be starting on Thursdays in March

National Comedy Theatre San Diego hosts comedy events featuring improv shows for audiences of all ages. It also offers stand up comedy classes, improv classes for adults, teens, and a program for teens and young adults diagnosed with autism or other social delays.
