SAN DIEGO — The AARP says more than one in four people will spend the holidays without family. This time of year many seniors will isolate themselves but we can help spread some holiday cheer.
Senior Helpers help seniors year-round but during the holidays they spread extra cheer to local seniors.
“This feels like the royal treatment,” said Robin Dewing, 71.
It can be lonely at times for the U.S. Army veteran. He lives on his own in a granny flat in Lemon Grove but still finds solitude.
“I'm not about to quit,” said Dewing.
His outlook is inspiring Senior Helpers, a non-medical in-home care provider who visit the elderly year-round but during the holidays they spread extra cheer.
“We wanted to bring you some holiday happiness this morning because we think you are amazing,” said Amy Duell, Caregiver Services Manager, Senior Helpers.
Santa's helpers decorated Robin's tree with ornaments and finished it with a bow on the top. They even put wrapped gifts under the tree.
“I'm a lyrist and I'm lost for words,” said Dewing.
It’s not often Dewing doesn’t have the words to express his gratitude.
“I don't know how to say thank you but thank you,” said Dewing. “It's a gift given to people who can't give back that is what Christmas is to me.”
Before the helpers left, Duell grew emotional as she said goodbye.
“I feel like you gave us more Christmas spirit than what we gave you,” said Duell.
They hope to continue to deliver the gift of joy, hope, and compassion.
“Hopefully our story gives everyone the inspiration to check in on our seniors,” said Duell.
If you would like to help a senior, you can bring them cookies, or spend an afternoon baking cookies with them or making ornaments.
You can also offer to take them holiday shopping and wrap their presents or pick up groceries.
