SAN DIEGO — A local non-profit says when it rains it pours in one of their houses but not anymore. Sister League of San Diego provides transitional housing for women who were once homeless.
One of their homes needed a new roof but it was going to cost thousands of dollars.
“It's really important for the community to rally behind us,” said Nuria Haro-Lopez, Sister League San Diego Executive Director.
In June, CBS 8 introduced you to Sister League, a non-profit that provides transitional housing and resources to women who were once homeless, survivors of domestic violence, and affected by mental illness.
“A roof is important, what is a home without a roof,” said Haro-Lopez.
But the women living there will tell you the roof needed a lot of work.
“It gets wet every time it rains a little bit that went in the room, and it went in the little bathroom up there so there was definitely a problem,” said Christine, Sister League resident.
The initial cost to repair the roof was $30,000. CBS 8 got to work, and Antis Roofing and Waterproofing stepped up to help.
“We all sleep better at night when we do this. And our work becomes so much more valuable. We know why we exist is to keep families safe and dry, said Charles Antis, Antis Roofing and Waterproofing owner. “We are together in community and it makes us better, it makes us stronger, it makes us happier.”
In July, CBS 8 surprised Haro-Lopez with the news that Antis Roofing would donate a roof.
But once the work started this week, they found the roof was in worse shape than they first thought.
“I mean, the roof is really bad, not only is it worn, but the flashings are rusted out, there's dry rot,” said Antis.
The cost to repair the roof went up to $50,000.
“The fact that Antis didn't even hesitate when an extra $20,000 got tacked on to what was already a $30,000 project is really amazing,” said Haro-Lopez.
Antis didn't do this alone; they got its suppliers IB Roof Systems, and Beacon Roofing Supply to donate the materials and lunch was provided by Wahoo's Fish Taco for the wrap party.
“It just kind of really restores my faith in our San Diego community,” said Haro-Lopez.
Antis Roofing joins Jerome’s Furniture in helping Sister League chip away at its list of $100,000 in repairs and upgrades for both of their homes.
“We're very, very appreciative of it,” said Christine.
This is how you hammer home the true meaning of Working for Our Community.
“Thank you, CBS, for just really recognizing and highlighting us,” said Haro-Lopez.

Sister League is also in need of household items, such as toilet paper, cleaning products and kitchen items including ziplock bags. They said these items are a huge chunk of their supply budget.
