SANTEE, Calif. — Valentine’s Day can be lonely for many seniors, but cupid delivered some love a little early in San Diego.
It’s follow up to a story CBS 8 first told you about in January. Senior Helpers, a non-medical in-home care provider, launched a Valentine’s Day card drive and the response has kept cupid busy.
Charles Fike has cherished Valentine’s Day with his lovely wife Joyce since they got married 59 years ago.
“Just be prepared for a lot of work, but I’ve learned the secret, “Yes, dear,” said Fike.
The recipe for a strong marriage can also be written in friendships.
Amy Duell, a Caregiver Services Manager at Senior Helpers East County, launched the card drive for the chapter.
“It’s wonderful to know that we have a community that still believes in compassion and kindness and just genuine people,” said Duell.
Flowers, treats and more than 1,800 handmade cards were donated for the drive.
A national poll on healthy aging found that 33 percent of seniors experience feelings of isolation.
“Everyone remembers us at Christmas but not so likely to remember at Valentine’s Day, it makes a difference,” said Randa Doust. “You never know what a smile will do for somebody,” said Doust.
The smiles help carve out hope for seniors opening the cards and the handwritten message inside carries a lot of love.
“Love is what keeps us going and love is what makes the world a better place,” said Duell.
Love helps create those smiles and it’s Joyce’s smile that Charles wants to hold on to a little longer.
“She is at stage seven now on the Alzheimer’s spectrum. Not sure how long we have but I want to make it as good as possible,” said Fike.
