New video shows dye pack exploding on Geezer Bandit

Newly released video is providing more information about the Geezer Bandit's latest heist.

(CBS 8) - Newly released video is providing more information about the Geezer Bandit's latest heist.

Surveillance video shows the bandit getting blasted by a dye pack as he leaves a Bank of America in San Luis Obispo. But it's not just the exploding dye pack that has the FBI's attention.

In the video, seconds after leaving the bank, the bank robber gets hit by the dye pack. Smoke surrounds him and red dye sprays all over him. He falls to his knees to gather his belongings and then sprints through the parking lot and disappears.

"That pace, that sprint away from the bank doesn't appear to be consistent with someone who is 60 or 70 years old. It appears to be someone younger in age, given the pace of that sprint, FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said.

The video is from December 2 in San Luis Obispo, and there's more. From inside the bank, there's footage of the Geezer Bandit at the teller window with his day planner, with a gun inside it.

"Which he points directly at the teller and he threatens to shoot that teller with that gun if she doesn't comply with his demands," Foxworth said.

It also gives us another clue -- the Geezer Bandit is left-handed.

"We hope that by releasing this video, this will assist us in trying to identify this serial bank robber," Foxworth said.

Investigators are also hoping releasing a still picture - will lead them to two potential witnesses who walked up to the bank just as the dye pack exploded.

This is the Geezer bandit's 16th robbery, 11 of which have happened here in San Diego County. It also appears to be his sloppiest job yet.

When the dye pack went off, the Geezer Bandit dropped his day planner and left it.

"The evidence that was collected at that bank robbery scene has been collected and forwarded to the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia," Foxworth said.

But that evidence does not include the Geezer Bandit's gun. Apparently he was able to grab that before running off.

A reward of up to $20,000 is now being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the Geezer Bandit. Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI.
