Man shot by Escondido police officer during traffic stop identified

The man allegedly got out of the car holding a crowbar and advanced toward an officer's squad car before the officer opened fire, police said.

SAN DIEGO — A 45-year-old Hispanic man was shot by an Escondido police officer Friday morning during a traffic stop, police said.

It happened shortly after 3:40 a.m. on Broadway near West Washington Avenue, according to the Escondido Police Department.

Police pulled over a white sedan on Broadway after receiving reports that 44-year- old Rosendo Sandoval Quezada of Escondido was driving the car and violated a restraining order at a nearby home, according to police. Quezada then allegedly got out of the car holding a crowbar and advanced toward an officer's squad car before the officer opened fire.

News 8 obtained a copy of the restraining order, which was filed on Tuesday. In it, Quezada's estranged wife wrote that just this past Monday, her husband arrived at her house seemingly on drugs, then grabbed and pushed her aggressively. She claimed he said "many things are going to happen here" and that she feared he would kill them both.

Quezada was struck multiple times and was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to the police. He was hospitalized in stable condition as of Friday evening.

Quezada has two prior criminal cases on his record.

The officer was not injured during the encounter and has been with the department for four years.

West Washington Avenue between Broadway and North Escondido Boulevard was shut down for nine hours for the investigation.
